i'm posting this story, not to defend an indefensible act, but to try to provide some balance.
the fact is that so many indians exist in a poverty so deep that it's difficult for westerners to even understand.
the youngest of the rapists in the now world known rape story, according to this uk, independent newspaper story, grew up in that world that seems hopeless.
Thank you The Independent for the clarified understanding.
the following is a true experience and my daughter gojira101 will verify that it happened to her.
an experience from our family's past that still haunts me and started my questioning whether this is the true organization of god or not.. my daughter, who has always been a good kid, never gave us any problems [she's an adult now] started regular pioneering.
within a few weeks of her starting, she fell on a steep hill and tore open her knee and had to have several stitches.
Ugh! That story sounds about right.
When I was 17 I signed up to regular pioneer. I had been baptized that March and signed up in August to start pioneering in September. Well, I was the first (and at the time) only young person reaching out to pioneer. Well 3 (yes 3) elders met with me at the beginning of September and counseled me to death.
They told me that I shouldn't have signed up to pioneer until I had been baptized for 6 months not 5 months. Also, I was only averaging 10 hours a month, so how dare me sign the slip. I was counseled to keep working on my spirituality and apply again.
Well, I was devastated. But I auxiliary pioneered the rest of the year, went to serve where the need was great and traveled a bit.
Then the following August, I put in my application again. Along with about 6 other recent high-school grads.
And the elder reading the new appointments announced my name last.
I tell you, back in the day, you couldn't have paid me to get a clue.
after several months of leaving the meetings as soon as they ended or only staying for "the first meeting" then leaving the "second part", the elders finally cornered me at last night's meeting.. they said they were concerned about me and that being that i am a young brother in a recently divided congregation they saw so much potential in me to help out the congregation and become a ms.. i told them i was thankful for their thinking of me to help the congregation but that at the moment i could not due to my job.
then the began asking personal questions that got on my nerves.. they asked where i worked and how much i made.
they asked if i was going to college and what i was studying and for how long.
"As I exited the hall one of the elders who really gets under my skin said out loud, "you must set your priorities ____!". To which I replied, "I have! Thanks!" got in the car and left."
TWO GIANT THUMBS UP!!!
ETA : If they ask again, tell them you'll get back with them. You're under no obligation to meet with them. Ever.
" jehovah's witnesses were not in the concentration camps because they were criminals.. .
when officers wanted someone to shave them, they trusted a witness with the razor, because they knew that no witness would ever use such an instrument as a weapon to harm another human.. .
when ss officers at the auschwits extermination camp needed someone to clean their homes or care for their children, they selected witnesses, because they knew these would not try to escape.. .
I was thinking the same thing about the gift baskets.
How nice of Jehovah to override the human survival instinct and have the JWs desperate for literature to be sent and not food!

Now imo the coin scene was emphasizing that it is fate that decides so much. No matter whether you're a good or bad person. Had it been tails the old guy would've been a goner.
I guess we're off topic...lol

I liked the dialogue in NCFOM. I'm always quoting those characters. Hilarious! and I love the scene where TommyLee is talking to his uncle about God.
